Nildo Essa

Nildo Essá, is an architect born in Maputo, Mozambique in July 1977. He finished his architectural course back in 2002, however even before finishing the course, back in 1998 he was invited by the local University to enrol also as an assistant teacher to aid in CAD related classes where he teaches to this day. He is a self-taught 3d Artist, Movie Director and in 2004 he founded FX Animation Studios where he spends most of his time to this day.

In 2004 he finished his first 3d short movie called “the chicken thief” and it turned out to be the first ever short animation in 3d done in Mozambique. He continued his efforts and in 2013 his second short was finished, this led him to participate in many film festivals and ended up being nominated for best African Animation by the AMAA Festival (Africa Movie Academy Awards) in Nigeria in 2014. Over the course of his professional life, he was responsible for more than 200 TV Commercials and other work. In 2010 he and his wife created an I.P. Called “Os Pestinhas” aka “Troublemakers” with the goal to show to kids and the public in general, original Mozambican stories thru Mozambican little heroes. In 2018 he was part of the Talents Durban Programme amongst another 9 other professionals where he attended several workshops related to Movie making for specifically script writing. In 2019, after having participated in several international events he finishes his third short entitled “A Special Gift” which again brought back home several awards and nominations. In that same Year, the project “TroubleMakers” was one the of the winners of the Pan-African competition for the “Animation Du Monde” category for Annecy 2019, which gave him the opportunity to pitch the project to over 250 People. From 2020 to 2021 he helmed productions for numerous PSA videos about COVID and other public awareness subjects from ExxonMobil, Save the Children and Johns Hopkins amongst other clients. He is currently and actively working on his first ever Animated feature length, that when finished will be the first project of its kind coming from Mozambique called “KIBWE”. In Mid-2021, he won grants from Reallusion Software (Pitch and Produce) and Epic Games (Epic MegaGrants) in support the “KIBWE” project. KIBWE has been officially in production since end of March of 2023 and it’s expected to be released in 2025.
